Cataracts

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are the clouding of the lens of your eye, which is normally clear. For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is a bit like looking through a frosty or fogged up window.

Most cataracts develop slowly and don't disturb your eyesight early on. But with time, cataracts will eventually interfere with your vision.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

  • Clouded, blurred, or dim vision
  • Increasing difficulty with vision at night
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Need for brighter light for reading and other activities
  • Seeing "halos" around lights
  • Fading or yellowing of colors

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is an operation to remove a cloudy lens in the eye. The only way to remove a cataract is with surgery. Dr. K recommends removing a cataract when it prevents you from performing activities of daily living.

During cataract surgery, your cloudy, natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL).

What to expect with cataract surgery?

Before surgery, Dr. K will measure your eye to set the proper focusing power for your IOL. Also, you will be asked about any medications you are currently using. You may be instructed to discontinue some of these medications before surgery.

After surgery, you will be prescribed eye drops to use. These medications will help prevent infection and reduce swelling after surgery.
